Population of Warsaw suburbs (Warsaw suburbs 1)

For those of our readers who prefer to also rely on scientific data when searching for real estate in the suburbs of Warsaw, we have prepared a series of articles about economic indicators and the state of the social sphere in cities nearby the Polish capital.

For ease of comparison, data is shown for the Warsaw Voivodeship and its constituent Warsaw metropolitan region. The Warsaw Metropolitan Region includes Warsaw (officially the Capital City of Warsaw) and 9 powiats. The powiats include communes, represented in our material by cities that are the centers of the corresponding communes.

Cities included in the Warsaw Functional Region (WOF) are marked in grey. We talked about WOF itself in a previous article.

The article was prepared in October 2023 and includes the latest available data at this time - at the end of 2021.

Our first article is about the population of the cities that make up the suburbs of Warsaw (Table 1).

If you choose a city around Warsaw based on population, we recommend considering the following. The most populated suburban town is Piaseczno (95,740 inhabitants). The next most populous city is Pruszków (65,333 people). More than 50 thousand people live in the cities of Grodzisk Mazowiecki (53,496 inhabitants), Legionowo (52,995), Wołomin (51,396 inhabitants).

On the other hand, 4 cities located near Warsaw have less than 10 thousand inhabitants. These are the cities of Podkowa Leśna, Kałuszyn, Mrozy, Zakroczym. Life in small towns has its own charm...

In terms of territory, the largest cities are Nasielsk - 206 sq. km., Mrozy - 145, Góra Kalwaria - 144, Radzymin - 129, Piaseczno - 128, Tarczyn - 114 sq. km. As you can see, of the cities with the largest population, only Piaseczno was included in the list by territory, and the tiny town of Mrozy (population 8,646) was in 2nd place.

Now about population density. You can choose a very compact city to live in. There is no equal here to the city of Ząbki, where 4,037 people fit on 1 square kilometer. The population density is high in the cities of Piastów (4017), Legionowo (3914 people/sq.km). Imagine that in these towns the density is greater than in Warsaw (3602 people / sq. km). The population density is also high in the cities of Pruszków (3405), Mińsk Mazowiecki (3060 people/sq.km).

Conversely, there are suburbs where the population density is less than 100 people per 1 sq. km. These are the already mentioned cities of Mrozy, Nasielsk, as well as Kałuszyn, Zakroczym. They either have a small population or a large territory. As they say, there is no third option.

For anyone interested in the topic of the ratio of men and women, there are more women than men living in the suburbs almost everywhere. So, there is nothing to choose from here.

You can get to know the number of children, able-bodied people and pensioners in the suburbs yourself.

Natural population growth in most suburban cities, as in the capital, is negative (Table 2). Slight positive dynamics in 2021 were noted only in the cities of Marki, Ząbki, Halinów, Piaseczno, Ożarów Mazowiecki, Radzymin.

The fact that there is no infant mortality in 10 cities (adjusted for a small number of births) seems worthy.

The fewest deaths (per 1000 people) occur in the cities of Halinów, Piaseczno, Łomianki, Kobyłka, Marki, Ząbki. In them the level does not exceed 10 people/1000 population (for comparison in Warsaw - 12.91). The mortality rate is more than 14 people/1000 population in the suburbs: Błonie, Podkowa Leśna, Konstancin-Jeziorna, Zakroczym, Zielonka, Kałuszyn, Mrozy, Karczew, Tarczyn. These are all small towns.

The birth of children is favorably influenced by nature and other circumstances... in the cities of Ząbki, Kobyłka, Marki and Ożarów Mazowiecki. Here the birth rate exceeds 12 children per 1000 population, which is significantly higher than the average for the capital region.

Let's take a look at which cities have had the most success in attracting new residents. In absolute terms, the largest number of people who previously lived in other cities in Poland moved to Piaseczno - 2269 people, Grodzisk Mazowiecki - 1730, Marki - 1468, Ząbki - 1181, Pruszków - 1134, Ożarów Mazowiecki - 934, Łomianki - 913, Legionowo - 850 people (Table 3).

Foreign residents were, in principle, more attracted to the same suburbs of Warsaw - Piaseczno, Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Marki, Pruszków, Ząbki.

We recommend paying attention to those cities near Warsaw where there was a positive migration balance in 2021. These are Marki (+1101 people), Grodzisk Mazowiecki (+1050), Piaseczno (+1023), Ożarów Mazowiecki (+674), Łomianki (+589), Ząbki (+563 people).

Among the suburbs, there are also cities where more people leave than arrive. These are Mińsk Mazowiecki, Kałuszyn, Nasielsk, Zakroczym, Piastów, Wołomin. There is also reason to think about the reasons.

In the next section we will define the youngest suburb of Warsaw. To do this, let's look at Table 4. It shows how many children and youth live in each city (by educational age groups from 3 to 24 years). To do this, we summarized all 5 age groups indicated in the table. In absolute terms, the largest number of children and youth live in the cities of Piaseczno - 24,811 people, Pruszków - 14,620, Grodzisk Mazowiecki - 13,698, Wołomin - 12,417, Legionowo - 12,096, Marki - 11,957, Ząbki - 11,689 people.

For obvious reasons, this list corresponds to the total population of the suburban part of Warsaw. That is, we cannot yet draw a conclusion about which city is the most youthful.

To obtain more objective data, the authors calculated the percentage of children and youth to the total population. The result is the following picture. The small town of Halinów takes the crown here, with 5,739 children and young people aged 3 to 24 for 17,984 inhabitants. This gives 28.6%. Next comes the city of Radzymin, in which for 30,302 inhabitants there are 8,542 children and youth, which is 28.2%. Next in terms of “youth” are the cities of Marki (27.7%), Łomianki and Tłuszcz (26.5% each), and Ząbki (26.4%). Now you can already conclude where your children will have more peers.

If we compare the suburbs of Warsaw in terms of the share of the population by educational age groups with the capital, then Warsaw clearly loses to any of the nearby towns, having a share of youth and children of only 20.3%. The suburbs are decidedly younger.
