Siekierki is the north-eastern part of the Mokotów district adjacent to the Vistula, a microdistrict that is part of Dolnego Mokotowa. Located on the territory of the so-called Łuku Siekierkowskiego. It is characterized by low-rise buildings of a typically residential nature.
History of the Siekierki neighborhood
The village called Siekierki was first mentioned in the 16th century. Incorporated into the borders of Warsaw in 1916 along with the rest of Mokotowa. In 1926, a dam was built along the left bank of the Vistula, which eliminated the threat of flooding in this area. During World War II, the Germans destroyed most of the buildings.
In the 1960s, about 3 thousand people lived in the Siekierki microdistrict. The houses were surrounded by fields, meadows and sandy roads.
New construction in Siekierkach began only in the 90s of the twentieth century.
In 1994, the construction of the Sanctuary of Mary in memory of the Epiphany was completed. In 2002, the nearby Trasa Siekierkowska expressway was put into operation, connecting the left and right bank parts of the city, and the cable-stayed Most Siekierkowski, which connected Mokotów with Praga-Południem and Wawrem.
The Siekierek area immediately adjacent to the Vistula was included in the protected areas of the Central Vistula Valley region in 2004, as part of the Warsaw Protected Landscape.
Siekierki has long remained an underinvested and largely unused area, however, since 2010 the area has seen significant development of new residential complexes. In 2019, the Aleja Polski Walczącej track was completed, connecting Trasa Siekierkowska with Ulica Czerniakowska. In the future, it is planned to lay a tram line along it as a continuation of the line running along Gagarin Street. In the future, it is planned to build the M3 metro line.
Today the nature of construction in Siekierki is very diverse. There are small houses with fruit trees in the gardens, large villas, and gated communities built in recent years. Siekierki is constantly expanding.

Sights of the Siekierki microdistrict
The main attractions of the neighborhood include the astronomical center of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Sanctuary of Mary.
The Sanctuary of Our Lady (Sanktuarium Matki Bożej Nauczycielki Młodzieży) is a very impressive church built on the site of apparitions of St. Mary that occurred during World War II. For many years there was a chapel here, which was expanded over time. The parish, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of the Followers, was erected in 1987. In the 1990s, a decision was made to build a sanctuary. The large temple, built with donations from parishioners and donors, was dedicated on September 17, 1994. The temple was then upgraded to sanctuary status.
Nature in Siekierkach
An attractive place for walks in Siekierkach is the bank of the Vistula. There is a beach and port Siekierki. The port served as a transshipment base for construction components and assemblies; the shore here was fortified and adapted to receive ships.
The section of the Wisła Warszawska nature trail runs along the Vistula River through Siekierki and stretches for 10 km – all the way to Wilanowa. The route can be covered on foot or by bicycle. Along the trail there are 2 observation platforms and 8 educational stands. During the walk you can also watch nesting birds.
A large area near the Vistula embankment and the Siekierkowskiej route is covered with garden plots.
Siekierkach has very active residents who undertake many interesting initiatives, cultivate the memory of the area's history and ensure the preservation of its unique, somewhat rural landscape along the Vistula River.
Social sphere in the Siekierki microdistrict
There are several grocery stores in Siekierkach, and interesting service and retail outlets are being built next to new residential areas. There are numerous food outlets, including pizzerias and sushi bars.
In the Sekerki area there are both municipal and private kindergartens, as well as a primary school. The POZ Pro Familia medical center is also located here.
Children can attend sports clubs - the Sekerki children's sports club (at the school) and the Falconia club.
Buses on several city routes run through Sekerki. Bus 108 goes from Square 3 Krzyży to the Wilanowska metro stop. Route 167 departs from the Siekierki-Sanktuarium stop towards Wolę, and route 168 (Witolin-Spartańska) goes along the newly built Polski Walczącej alley. An interesting fact is that bus 108 has been transporting residents of Siekierek without changes on a direct route to Śródmieścia for 75 years.
Siekierki is a developing area of Mokotow that has a quieter character and at the same time provides basic communication, commercial and educational services. Siekierki will appeal to you if you want to live in a quiet place, but close to the most necessary social services.
